Meet Ruth, an introverted accountant working at one of the Big Four firms. With her dedication and impeccable work ethic, she had proven time and again that she is capable. But when the time for promotion arrived, her boss dropped a bombshell. He questioned her ability to lead a team and handle clients due to her introversion and lack of confidence. Ouch!
Feeling like she had hit a career roadblock, Ruth sought coaching from me and set out on a quest to find her lost confidence and regain her rightful place in the corporate world. And so, her journey began.
Actually, Ruth wasn’t entirely convinced that she had anything valuable to offer. Her boss saw her potential and even encouraged her to speak up and assert herself. But Ruth was more comfortable being an observant wallflower and kept her brilliant ideas locked away in the depths of her introverted mind. Her self-doubts also prevented her from stepping out and risking rejection.
As I delved deeper into Ruth’s situation, she revealed that she felt inferior to her brothers who are superachievers. One was a doctor, the other a lawyer. Growing up, her parents would often compare her to her illustrious siblings, hoping it would spur her to be more ambitious.
Those constant comparisons took a toll on Ruth’s confidence. She became blind to her own unique qualities, imprisoned by a belief that she was never good enough. Like a hamster on a wheel, she kept spinning in circles, unable to break free from her self-imposed limitations.
Together, we devised a plan to shatter her self-doubt, employing a mix of practical steps and mind-altering exercises. We embarked on a comprehensive exercise to analyse Ruth’s personal qualities and gifts. We discovered a treasure trove of greatness within her. Ruth was meticulous, responsible, and trustworthy. She was always the first to arrive and committed to delivering her best in any project. Plus, she has a heart of gold, treating everyone she met with kindness and consideration. What a gem!
To help Ruth shine as a leader, we devise strategies to tap into her strengths and introverted charm to help her be a strong influence. With her graciousness, and her preference to connect one-to-one or in smaller groups, she was able to build strong relationships with colleagues, superiors, and clients. Because she took time to listen and give in-depth thoughts on problems, people respected her and often sought her opinions. Her faithfulness made her a dependable force, earning the trust of her team members and boss. Her virtuousness makes her a great role model in making sound decisions and doing the right thing, no matter what.
With newfound confidence and a solid plan, Ruth forged her own path to success. Within a year, she received that well-deserved promotion. But that’s not all! Ruth landed a big overseas project where she was tasked to take charge.
When I caught up with Ruth later on, she couldn’t contain her happiness. With a grin stretching from ear to ear, she exclaimed, “I feel good about myself now!” And rightly so. Ruth had embraced her unique strengths, shattered the glass ceiling of self-doubt, embraced her introversion and emerged as a force to be reckoned with.
May her story inspire us all to embrace our quirks, silence our self-doubt, and unleash our inner superheroes.
